Down to the Wire

With eight days left before I drive out to sunny Seattle I'm making some pretty big modifications to the boat following it's latest round of sea trials. During the trials we capsized the boat repeatedly and the results were rather disappointing. If you go over the boat will simply sink from underneath you. So I'm adding a rear airbox to assist in the recovery process. This is not included in the plans but I figure it can't hurt. The math to get the shape was a bit tricky and the fact he boat has a concave bottom isn't helping anything. But in the end a cardboard template was made and the quarter inch plywood was cut out. As noted in the board pages, Mike and I work well together. Here are some of my favorite qoutes from the afternoon. "The whole boat is made of quarter inch!" "Eh, that's what PL Premium is for." "I could fuss that a bit more. No I won't. Yes I will"  It was a great afternoon. Working on a boat with a friend is always a joy. Here is a shot of of Mike working on the airbox.

While he was working on that I reattached the lower leeboard mounting with four screws and PL Premium. The next time it rips off it won't be as neat. But we're not thinking about that right now. Now sadly I won't be able to install the deck plate before the show but that is the plan to allow access and storage. Following the completion of the box the paint will be touched up and the boat prepared for it's trip. The saga continues!

Dry dock

As with all vessels, Wawona came into dry dock following her maiden voyage. I've decided we are simply in sea trials at the moment. There were a few glaring issues that need to be dealt with before I put her back in the water. I'll discuss them in a relative order of importance.

Launch Day!

Eighty two days after the project started the day I've been looking forward to has arrived. Launch of my first boat I'd ever built. The day could not have been better, highs in the high 50's and a light wind east to west. Loaded up Wawona in the roommate's truck and in company with my lovely first mate I headed west. It's Always Something

I mentioned in my last post about excessive mast movement. Well today I did something about it! It wasn't the prettiest thing in the world, far from it. Yardsailing

On a whim I took Wawona out for a yard sail today. I moved the sawhorses to a broad reach and got the jib and main set up. It was marvelous! I got to try out changing tension on the down haul and general sail handling. It was glorious!

If it wasn't for the fact I'm on dry land I bet I'd be doing two knots! I need to work on getting the mast a bit more centered but that's an easy fix. I've also reduces most of the things I need to small green bag. In there are the nail that holds the rudder on,...

Drawing to a Close

As you may have seen, the S/V Wawona is getting to ready to launch. And like any project all those little things are all coming at me at once and it's a bit overwhelming at times. The end is in sight but it's so far away! But as someone famously said "You eat a whale one bite at time!" So I've started taking bites. Snow Thoughts

Woke up this morning to snow. Just a drizzle but snow nonetheless. Not that this is any sort of surprise in a state where snow in June isn't worth raising an eyebrow for. A Mighty Day!

Today for the first time the mast has been raised aboard our flagship, the S/V Wawona. This marks the first time I have been able to see it as it will be on the water. There is still a lot to do but I am closing the gap between a dream and reality. The next major hurdle will be getting the outside seams sealed. Then a float test! So many people have asked me if it floats I'd like to be able to answer them!
